Last week I had the opportunity to attend the American Council for Construction Education’s Annual Meeting in Tacoma, WA.  For those of you not familiar with the ACCE, they are the leading accrediting agency for 4-year baccalaureate construction programs in the United States.  In addition to myself, several AIC Board Members and volunteers were in attendance.

During the conference I had the opportunity to sit in on a few meetings.  The first being the Industry Caucus.  This group provides a vital link to the ACCE and the industry at large.  It gave me the opportunity to share an update about AIC and also to hear what issues the industry is bringing forward to the ACCE.

I also had the chance to speak to all attendees during a lunch session.  In my update I shared how AIC was in the final stages of earning ANSI Accreditation for our AC and CPC Programs.  I also shared how we are investigating Computer Based Testing for our examinations.  Another update was our efforts to build new reporting that will fit hand in hand with the new outcomes based assessment requirements that ACCE Accredited programs will begin to adhere to.  I anticipate this being a powerful tool for universities as they begin the path towards these new accreditation requirements.

Lastly, I spoke with several ACCE Members about their efforts to grow and support Industry Advisory Board’s at their accredited programs. More than ever is it important to have industry involvement and support of university programs and the best way to foster that involvement is through an IAB.  I challenge each of our AIC Members, ACs, and CPCs to find a local IAB or perhaps their alma mater’s IAB and get involved with them.  Efforts spent with an IAB will directly impact the lives of our industry’s future leaders, something I think we can all agree is important to us.  A list of ACCE Accredited programs can be viewed here or you can contact me to put you in touch with a program.
