CPD Maintenance Overview

Last updated by Joseph Sapp on 7/27/2011 9:51:44 AM

You must periodically maintain the title of "Associate Constructor" or "Certified Professional Constructor" once you have received your certification. The actions you must take are described below, but the commission will always inform you or pending deadlines for these requirements.

The continued certification requirements are:

  1. Payment of annual renewal fee.

  2. Abiding by the Constructor Code of Conduct.

  3. Continuing Professional Development .  Review the full CPD Requirements document here.

Revocation of a Designation

The Commission retains the right to revoke any individual's certification if it determines that the individual has failed to maintain the certification in accordance with the established requirements described above.

Grounds for termination of certification include, but are not limited to,

  1. falsification of the application or any portion thereof;
  2. conviction of a felony;
  3. failure to comply with Continuing Professional Development requirements;
  4. violation of the Constructor Code of Conduct; and
  5. failure to pay the yearly renewal fee.
Notification will be sent by the Commission to the individual whose termination is being considered. The individual shall have a specified amount of time to show good cause, in writing, to the Commission that the termination is unwarranted or that the individual is correcting the deficiency that is the basis for the termination. Thereafter, if the Commission determines the termination should remain in force, the Commission will request that any issued certificates and cards be returned to the Commission. Failure to return the certificates and cards to the Commission on request may subject the individual to legal action for which the Commission will seek the reimbursement of its costs expended in the action.

The annual fees are $50 for all ACs or CPCs, except those that are also AIC members (holding and AC or CPC designation is not AIC membership, learn more about membership here.) Active AIC members are exempt from paying the $50 annual fee.

Invoices are emailed once per year, depending on the date of certification.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

To ensure that certificate holders maintain a high level of expertise both at the time of the examination and throughout their careers, each Associate or Certified Professional Constructor is required to maintain Certification status through a documented program of continuing education and service. This program is called the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program.

Means of Obtaining Credit:

Certificants must earn 32 CPD credits per two-year period. Credits are awarded on a contact hour basis. That is, one hour of CPD activities (described below) is worth exactly one CPD credit. There are two ways of acquiring credit:

Education: All educational courses that pertain to the management of the construction process, from all reputable providers, can earn educational CPD credit. Educational credit is always earned at the rate of one credit for every one clock hour of educational content. There is no limit to the number of educational hours one may submit in any two-year period. One may complete the entire 32 credit CPD requirement solely through educational credits. A more detailed description of the requirements for educational credit is noted herein.

Membership and Service: Certificants can earn CPD credit for attending meetings and conferences of construction industry associations (e.g. AGC, CIOB, ASA, AIC, etc), as well as from performing community service for charitable organizations. These credits are typically worth one CPD credit per hour of attendance / service in the respective organization, though it is possible to earn additional credits by holding leadership positions. No more than 12 of the total 32 credit requirement can be claimed for Membership and Service activities. The remaining 20 credits must come from education. A more detailed description of the requirements for Membership and Service credit is noted herein.
