AIC Member Roger Liska was recently awarded the Mark Benjamin Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Council for Construction Education. The award was presented February 26, 2016 at the AIC Awards Ceremony in San Diego by ACCE Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Allan Hauck. Below is more information on this award and the winner.
Introduction of the Award
“I have a special honor tonight to help with the presentation of the very first ACCE Mark Benjamin Lifetime Achievement Award. Two and a half years ago, we all tragically lost a colleague, a friend, and a true contributor to our common goal of providing quality construction education. Mark served as President/CEO of Morley Builders from 1981 until his passing in 2013. He made a personal commitment of his time and energy to ACCE as a long-time member of the Board of Trustees, Chair of numerous committees and task forces, and President from 2005 to 2007. He continued to serve ACCE after his Presidency working tirelessly to update and reform our governance structure resulting in our new set of By-Laws adopted last year. Beyond all this, Mark was just a pleasure to work with: organized, patient with those of us not yet convinced of the value of the changes he was advocating, and quick with a smile and a bit of self-deprecating humor. Last year, the ACCE Board of Trustees was very pleased to honor his legacy with the creation of the Mark Benjamin Lifetime Achievement Award.
“And tonight, we are very honored to welcome Mark’s son, Matt Benjamin, and Mark’s long-time colleague at Morley Builders, Bob Given, to help present this first award. We have asked them to say a few words this evening.”
Matt Benjamin provided extemporaneous comments and remembrances about his father and his commitment to his work with ACCE. Matt was presented with a plaque of appreciation by Dr. Hauck.
Introduction of the Mark Benjamin Lifetime Achievement Award Winner
“This year’s winner of the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award is certainly no stranger to any of us. His nominator for the award said, ‘I knew and worked with Mark Benjamin for over 20 years and was very pleased that ACCE has chosen to honor Mark’s memory and his service by the creation of this award. I can honestly think of no one whose career has truly demonstrated the extent of his service and the depth of his commitment to construction education more than this nominee. I believe that Mark would have been the first in line to be able to second this nomination.’
“Tonight’s recipient of this award has served the construction profession as both an educator and practitioner for over 40 years. In fact, he is one of the first people you think of when you hear the phrase ‘Construction Professional.’ In addition to his extensive service at ACCE, he has served the AIC, the AIC Education Foundation, and the AIC Certification Commission as a founding member and the first Chair – a position that he held for a decade. He is a Certified Professional Constructor and a member of the Colleges of Fellows of both AIC and CIOB. He has served as the long-time Chair of the Department of Construction Science and Management at Clemson University where he is praised for his ‘focused, unassuming, and professional approach to his work.’ To receive the very first Lifetime Achievement Award, please help me recognize Dr. Roger W. Liska.
